Orange Identity usage problem - Help needed
Started by Florin Florea on 08 Jun 2004

Hi everyone,

I have to design a poster for an event that is sponsored
by different companies.
One of them is ORANGE.
When we asked for the logo they said that the logo
should be in the right bottom corner at a half logo
square from the margins.
This would be away from the other sponsors but that
may not be a problem except they said the size of the logo square
for a poster of 50 x 70 cm is at 4-5 cm square.
My poster will be 100 x 70 cm that makes the square
logo even bigger at 7.5 cm. This will make the logo bigger then
the headline of the event itself. First they requested 20 x 20 cm
for the plasement of their logo.
It looks strange for me.
This is not a promotional poster for this company but an event
in which Orange is part of the sponsoring beside others.
There are a lot of things going on in this event that i have to put
in this poster. Everything is so small because of it.
Do you think this is a good way of applying the rules?
Are the rules so or the guys there can't read the manual?

Did someone had a similar problem?
Does anybody have an Orange manual?

I haven't had to work with them but I think you can certainly tell them
while you will do your best to maintain the integrity of their logo that
their specific usage needs are not applicable in this case since they are
not the only sponsor and there needs to be an equal weighting of logo
sizes in fairness to all of the participants. And since this isn't just
there poster, then there 'guidelines' are really not in effect as far as
logo size and positioning.

A comprehensive corporate graphic standards manual should provide for such
joint or cooperative signature situations. The operative rules, I would
suggest, are equal emphasis for all participants, so it's clearly
cooperative, and as much isolation for each mark as can reasonably be
achieved.

Hi Tony,

Unfortunately I don't have the Orange manual of identity to check it.
The guys from the romanian office just told us how they want it.
I felt it was wrong and had to ask. I'm glad that i'm not the only one
that sees things differently.

I assume the manual has more details since it's done by Ollins and the
company is big.
Maybe the local guys only got a part of it or didn't red it completly.
Or maybe they just wanted it really big.

Thank you for your reply.

Best regards,

Orange Identity usage problem - Help needed

Hi Robert,

Thank you very much for your reply on such short notice.
I thought it's just me that i'm crazy seeing these things like this.
Luckily the other participants don't want same logo sizes
as Orange so that there would be no more room for the event itself
(if they all could fit into the paper size).
People would buy tickets to see those companies and watch their logos
instead of an event and the performers.

Maybe there should be such notice in the manuals like:
"This is applicable for company's promotional materials."
And leave some room for fairness regarding other materials.

My client wanted them to be pleased.
I just thought it's far too much.

Thanks once again.

Thanks Marius,

You are absolutely right.
Implementing it it's my problem too.
I want to do it right and still not affecting others and the whole piece.

Thanks for the manual.
I hardly wait to see it.

You would be surprised to learn that identity manuals are very often
overlooked. By marketing people who do not understand very well issues like
clearance space. By designers who usually hate to read stuff. By internal
people who are fed up with rules and norms, and think it's plain stupid not
to use Comic Sans or 3D PowerPoint effects.
The sad part is this happens at large corporations, too. Brand management is
not just writing a brand guide: the toughest part is to implementing it.

I just sent you the Orange identity manual.
